  Hydropower from Screw Pumps

The traditional Archimedean screw is now being used for low-head hydro-generation projects. An efficient use of water power is already achieved at a level difference of 1 meter and a capacity of 500 l/sec.

The largest capacity and level difference for hydropower screws is as much as 15000 l/sec. at 10 meter. Benefits of hydropower screws include high efficiency (up to 86%), simple installation, low maintenance costs and self-regulating to changing water flow.

The screws are also extremely fish-friendly and insensitive to clogging. In Switzerland, Hirschthal, A hydropower screw was recently installed in Hirschthal, Switzerland. The screw is 2.8 m diameter, 10 m long, and with a capacity of 3,500 l/sec.

Power generation is 110 kW with a head of 3.5 m. At the beginning of September, 2011, two large hydropower screws with screw troughs and drive units have been transported to Windsor, UK. These screws will generate sustainable energy (185kW) for local use and for the Queen's Windsor Castle. Screw diameter is 4 m and screw length 5.8 m.

Landy Robot Equivalent PumpsLandy - Robot-Equivalent Pumps

PCM MoineauPumpability in Ice Cream

Earlier this year pumpability completed a project for flavour dosing into ice cream, using a weight loss system with a PCM Moineau progressing cavity pump. The system measures the rate of weight loss from the flavour supply hopper and adjusts the pump speed to maintain an accurate dosing rate according to the recipe keyed in by the operator. The photo shows the system after test in our workshop.

Pumpability has since been awarded a contract by another ice cream manufacturer for much more sophisticated PCM Dosys pumps for also dosing flavours into ice cream. Compared to progressing cavity pumps, the PCM Dosys pumps have more precision and better repeatability with clean-in-place capability. These pumps are part of a fully integrated control system aimed at upgrading industry standards for hygiene and precision in the manufacture of ice cream.

Thompson Strainers Rinse System imageThompson Strainer goes Food-Grade

Thompson strainers are now available for food applications. The strainers are finished internally by filling, grinding and polishing to remove all cracks and crevices where particles could accumulate. Long-known for low head loss, large surface area and versatile configuration, the spiral jet rinsing nozzle is now making the strainers even more popular in the food industry.

Pictured is a fully-automated duplex 80 mm strainer system with spiral jet rinse nozzles, sanitary valves and controls.

Rinse systemRinse System for Thompson Strainer

The Thompson strainer has been used in many Australian applications because of its low head loss, large surface area, full stainless steel construction and value for money. The strainer can now be even more effective when fitted with a spray system for rinsing the screen in-situ, minimising the need for manual cleaning. A special spiral spray nozzle in the top of the screen washes accumulated material down into the collection reservoir at the bottom of the strainer, from where the debris can be flushed out of the housing.

The system is available for the 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm strainers. A supply pressure of 400 kPa is required for the rinse water.

Dewatering pump sets at Wyaralong DamWyaralong Dam

Pumpability has been awarded a contract for the supply of diesel-driven flood dewatering pump sets at Wyaralong Dam, now under construction near Beaudesert in Queensland.

The supply includes four 250 mm self-priming pump sets and two 100 mm self-priming pump sets. The pumps are from BBA in the Netherlands, matched locally to engines and baseplates, as well as pontoon mounting for some of the units.

Additional PCM Moineau pumps have been supplied to a sand processor in Victoria.

These pumps are used for feeding sand washings to the belt press and thickener and for disposal of concentrated slimes from the thickener.

Versatile Submersible Pumps

Pumpability is supplying 4.7 kW and 26 kW Weda and Mody submersible pumps to a marine salvage company for pumping out the flooded holds of ships.

These pumps were selected because they can be used on both 400V/50Hz and 440/60Hz power supplies with only an impeller change.

When salvage operators attend a job they do not always know in advance what power will be available and with these pumps it will be a quick and easy process if necessary to alter the pumps to match the power supply.
